The trail goes near but stops short of the actual summit of the dome. Fantastic views of the Castle Craigs and surrounding valleys but Mt. Shasta was hidden behind the rocks and not visible from the jagged edges of the craigs. Only when I later climbed around the peaks did I get views of Shasta. Definately worth the extra 5.5 mile off the PCT and I'm probably the only thru-hiker willing to scramble off for this one.
